It is time - to tidy your inventory!

Hi friends!

So this time I want to talk about your guilty conscience. Oh yes. We all know it! You might look all cool and composed on the surface, but you have a lot of mess in that closet, don't you?

I am of course talking about your inventory! If you aren't on top of it all the time, it is like you close it, and all your items are making babies in there, filling it up and untidying it even worse, until next time you have a look.

Today I am going to talk about three things:

  1. How to structure your inventory so you can find everything

  2. How to clean out what you currently have

  3. How to keep it tidy in the future

Structure and organisation

If this is the first time you are going through the cleansing task of fixing your inventory, my bet is that your Objects folder is about the worst (or if you are a step ahead, then it will be the Clothing folder).

It is a great idea to make an intuitive folder structure, where everything you have has it's own place. How far you want to take it, is basically up to you, but I am going to show what I have done here.

This is the root folder, with nearly only system folders present, and some of those even hidden, like Gestures and Photo Album since I don't use them.

I have added a folder for Accessories since I want as little clutter in my "Objects" folder as possible.

Within these folders I have then made subfolders to make it even easier, so in Body Parts I have "Head", "Body", "Skins" et.c. and in Accessories I have "Jewellery", "Bags" and so on. Now, let us take a look at my clothing folder, and how I have organised that.

Here I have made folders for each category of clothing, so I easily can find any specific item.

You might want to make a different approach, if you have a lot of sets, or wants to sort it by creator or similar.

Inside each of these folders is then subfolders if needed, like "Pants" could be joggers, jeans or leggings. Let's take a look at my Tops folder and see how that is then again sorted into subcategories.

Again, this might be a bit of overkill for your need, or you might just throw all your tops into one folder but need five levels of subcategories for your shoes, so you kind find that specific one in Clothing > Shoes > Heels > High Heels > Colourful > Pink ;)

Having a good and logical (to you) structure of folders will make everything so much easier when you get new items, as you know exactly where to put them and later find them again.

The Big Spring Cleaning!

Now that you have your folders in check, it is time to remove some of those items that only gather dust. If you have been around for a long time, you probably have a LOT of those. And I know how most people in here hate to delete items they got, and I have friends who has ten year old system clothing laying around because they paid for it back then.

So let us break this down into a few steps to make it manageable.

Step 1: Move all the clutter into one place!

Now that you are starting to make all those pretty folders, I suggest you make one called CLUTTER and place it in the root of your inventory. Inside that you can make a subfolder called Clothing and then move everything from your current clothing folder to that, do the same for Body Parts and Objects etc.

This way you have all your clutter in one place, and can see what you have sorted and what is still needing some TLC.

Step 2: Delete what you don't need!

This one is going to hurt. I know, hush, it will be okay! Anything bought from a store that uses CasperVend or other Redelivery systems (go ahead and make sure before you delete) that you don't use, needs to go. You can always go back and get it again, if it was a mistake.

Same for anything that has Copy permission on the marketplace - Delete it, as you can always go back and get a redelivery on that.

Demos need to go now. No questions asked. If you haven't gotten the actual product now, you aren't going to. And again, if you get cold feet, you can get the demo again.

Delete stuff you know you won't ever use. I have bought expensive items on a whim. Then realised that I am never ever going to use it. If it has sentimental value (gifted, something you did with someone special) keep it! but otherwise, that trash bin is big and can hold a lot of junk.

So as you move through the items and decide to keep and move to the right folder or delete it, you will probably find that some additional subset of folders are needed, so don't be rigid on it just yet, and adjust accordingly.

Step 3: Do NOT empty trash!

If you have been neglecting your Inventory for a long time, you might spend days on step 2, so whatever you do, I suggest you leave your trash alone for at least some days after you are done, to make sure you can restore anything you might have deleted in error.

Keeping it tidy

Now that you are done with sorting and carrying your junk out to the bin, here comes probably the most important step. How to avoid this situation when you own 200,000 items down the road.

Whether you make a folder or subfolder it is a good idea to have a place to drop demos, unpackers and boxes with items you've bought that isn't redeliverable. I suggest making a few subfolders, so it could look something like this.

One subfolder for boxes and unpackers, where you aren't yet certain you got everything you wanted.

One for Demos - because let's face it, some times we just don't have time to go back and forth between store and home to check it out.

One for all those other things we get, transfers from friends, gifts from events and so on.

One last thing I want to mention is the filters in your inventory. I am not going to deep dive into that today, but it is a great way to find certain items, like older than a certain date, newer than a certain date, type of item, created by yourself and so on.

This just about wraps it up for this time! Most important, delete that junk - you are never going to wear that prim blouse from 2011 again, sweetheart :-)
